- Find the right yacht for your group
The number of guests a yacht can carry is the most important figure on any listing, and also the most misunderstood. Book too small and your group spends the afternoon squeezed around a table. Book too large and you pay for deck space nobody uses. This guide explains how capacity really works on Dubai's yachts, how much room different kinds of groups need, and which sizes suit which occasions, from a proposal for two to a corporate gathering of fifty-five.
The short version: start with a yacht licensed for at least your full headcount, including children and anyone who might join late. Then think about what your group will actually do on board. A standing celebration can come close to the maximum, but if everyone will sit down to eat together, choose a yacht whose capacity is comfortably above your number. As a rough guide, 2 to 15 guests suit an intimate yacht, 16 to 20 a mid-size yacht, 21 to 45 a large yacht, and 46 to 55 one of our three largest yachts.
Licensed capacity and comfortable capacity are not the same thing
Every yacht has a licensed capacity: the maximum number of guests it is permitted to carry. This is a safety limit, not a guideline, and no reputable operator will go over it. Every guest on the list counts towards it, children and babies included, so a family of twelve with four children needs a yacht licensed for at least sixteen.
Comfortable capacity is a different question, and it depends on how your group will spend the time:
- Standing and mingling: drinks, music and conversation. Guests move around, so you can come close to the licensed number.
- Seated dining: if everyone will sit down to eat together, you need enough seats and table space for the whole group at once. This is where a little extra room makes the biggest difference.
- Lounging and swimming: sunbathing, swim stops and quiet time spread people across the deck, the bow and the lounge, so a mid-size group can feel very relaxed on the right yacht.
- Dancing or a party atmosphere: needs open deck space, and it is worth choosing a yacht with more than one area so people can step away from the music.
A useful rule of thumb: if a seated meal is part of the plan, aim for a yacht whose licensed capacity is around a quarter higher than your headcount. If the day is mostly standing and mingling, you can choose closer to the limit.
Small groups: up to 15 guests
Couples, close friends, small families and proposals. Smaller yachts feel personal, the crew can look after everyone individually, and the cost of the whole yacht is shared by just a few people.
On our fleet, Prestige takes up to 13 guests, from AED 590 per hour, with warm interiors and private cabins. Arcadia 43 takes up to 15 guests, from AED 750 per hour, with a spacious lounge, a shaded deck and multiple cabins. Java, a flybridge yacht, also takes up to 15 guests, from AED 1,300 per hour.
For a couple or a group of four to eight, either of these yachts will feel generous. For a proposal or an anniversary, this size is ideal: private enough to feel like your own space, with crew who know how to stay in the background at the right moment.
Mid-size groups: 16 to 20 guests
This is the size most birthdays, family days and friends' gatherings fall into. A mid-size yacht has room for a proper table, a shaded deck, a lounge and somewhere for people to drift off to in pairs and small groups.
On our fleet:
- Calista 45: up to 16 guests, from AED 800 per hour
- Ammos: up to 18 guests, from AED 690 per hour
- Luna: up to 18 guests, from AED 750 per hour
- Majesty: up to 20 guests, from AED 760 per hour
- Marquise: up to 20 guests, price on request
If your group is close to the top of a yacht's capacity and you are planning a sit-down meal, consider stepping up. For example, a group of eighteen who want lunch at anchor will be more comfortable on Majesty, which takes twenty, than on a yacht licensed for exactly eighteen. For birthdays, a mid-size yacht also leaves space for a cake table, décor and a photographer without crowding the deck.
Large groups: 21 to 45 guests
Big birthdays, extended families, team outings and corporate gatherings. At this size the layout matters as much as the headcount. Look for yachts with several distinct areas, such as a flybridge or upper deck, a main deck and an indoor lounge, so that the group naturally spreads out and conversations can happen without shouting over the music.
On our fleet, Sterling takes up to 38 guests, from AED 2,100 per hour, with generous decks and modern interiors. Vantage takes up to 43 guests, from AED 1,500 per hour, with spacious interiors and a refined dining area.
Two practical points for larger groups:
- Arrival. Thirty or forty people rarely arrive at the same moment. Set a meeting time 20 to 30 minutes before departure and share the boarding point in advance so your charter time is spent on the water rather than waiting at the pier. We share the exact berth and arrival details with your booking.
- The guest list. You may be asked for guest names and identification details for the passenger list before departure. Collecting them early saves a scramble on the day.
Fifty to fifty-five guests: our largest yachts
For grand celebrations and corporate events, three yachts take fifty guests or more. Black Sovireign 88 takes up to 55 guests, from AED 2,000 per hour, with expansive decks and refined interiors for private and corporate occasions. Atlas, from AED 8,000 per hour, and Stride Superyacht, from AED 17,500 per hour, each take up to 50: Atlas has expansive deck spaces designed for events and social gatherings, and Stride is a grand yacht with multiple outdoor lounges and even an onboard gym.
At this level the experience is as much about hosting as space. A large yacht gives you room for a welcome drink on one deck, dinner on another and a quiet corner for those who want one. If your group is larger than fifty-five, talk to us about your plans and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Match the yacht to the occasion, not just the headcount
Two groups of twenty can need very different yachts. A few examples:
- Proposals and anniversaries: privacy matters more than space. A smaller yacht with a secluded spot on deck, timed for sunset, is usually perfect.
- Birthdays: you need a place for the cake, the décor and the photos, plus room for people to move. A mid-size yacht is the natural choice for most birthday groups.
- Families with young children: look for shaded areas, an indoor lounge for breaks from the sun and a calm, stable ride. Life jackets are carried on board, and it is worth asking for children's sizes when you book.
- Corporate groups: a mix of indoor and outdoor space helps if there will be a short speech or a toast, followed by time to mingle.
- Overnight stays: the number of people who can sleep on board is far lower than the number who can join a day cruise, because it depends on cabins and berths. If you are planning an Overnight Escape, tell us how many guests will stay the night.
Questions to ask before you book
Whoever you book with, these questions will help you choose the right size:
- Is the stated capacity the licensed maximum, and does it include children?
- How many guests can sit down to eat at the same time?
- Is there an indoor, air-conditioned lounge, and how many people does it seat?
- Are there cabins where guests can change or rest?
- Can we bring our own cake or decorations, or should these be arranged through you?
- What happens if our numbers change after we book?
- Where do we board, and what arrival time do you recommend for a group our size?
Bigger is not always more expensive per person
Because you pay for the yacht rather than per seat, a larger group sharing a larger yacht can work out at a similar cost per person to a smaller group on a smaller one. Using our published starting rates for a three-hour charter:
- Eight guests on Prestige: AED 1,770 in total, or about AED 221 each.
- Twenty guests on Majesty: AED 2,280 in total, or about AED 114 each.
- Forty guests on Vantage: AED 4,500 in total, or about AED 113 each.
Prices shown are starting rates and exclude any add-ons. For a full breakdown of what affects the total, see our guide to yacht rental prices in Dubai.
Frequently asked questions
Do children count towards a yacht's capacity?
Yes. Every person on the guest list counts towards the licensed capacity, including children and babies.
Can we add guests on the day?
Only if the yacht still has room within its licensed capacity. If your numbers might grow, tell us when you book so we can choose a yacht with space to spare.
What if our group gets smaller after we book?
Let us know as soon as you can. We will check whether your yacht is still the best fit and, if it makes sense, suggest an alternative.
What is the largest group FIA Yachts can host?
Up to 55 guests, on Black Sovireign 88. Atlas and Stride Superyacht each take up to 50. For larger groups, get in touch and we will talk through what is possible.
Is a bigger yacht smoother on the water?
Larger yachts generally feel more stable, especially when the sea is lively, but every yacht in our fleet is chosen for a comfortable ride. If anyone in your group is prone to seasickness, mention it and we will suggest the calmest time of day and route.
Find the right yacht for your group
Choosing the right size is the single best way to make a charter feel relaxed rather than crowded. Start with your headcount, think about how the day will run, then compare yachts on the fleet page. Or simply tell us who is coming and what you are celebrating, and we will recommend the yacht that fits.
